Local record

Three things on file about houses here

01

Over 200 buildings on the National Register

The Allentown Historic District takes in more than 200 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, anchored by the Old Mill on South Main Street. In a district that dense, exterior work on a contributing property is far more likely than not to need preservation review alongside the construction permit.

02

A mill town where the mill predates the country

The grist mill at 42 South Main Street was built in 1855, replacing the original mill Nathan Allen put up on the site in 1706. The borough grew around it. Buildings in the old core have had three centuries of alteration by many different hands, and very little of what is behind their walls is standard.

03

The far western corner of the county

Allentown sits at the western edge of Monmouth County, well away from the shore and the Bayshore, in country that is agricultural rather than coastal. Salt air is not a factor here; age, well and septic systems, and long service runs on larger plots are.

  • I’m so glad to have The Trusty Monmouth County Handyman out and repair my kitchen cabinets. The previous homeowner did not use the correct screws and even missed the studs on some of them. All secure and up to code now. He finished a little early and asked what else he could look at and cleaned out the tub drain too.

  • I called on The Trusty Monmouth County Handyman Services once again. This time I needed drywall repair. The texture that was applied to the ceilings during construction of this house — over time the texture started to release and some of it fell. I tried to repair this myself but had no luck. I’m not permitted to use ladders anymore since I have the tendency to fall off. That’s why I called the Handyman. He fixed all my texture that was falling. He also inspected the rest of my ceiling to check for any cracking so he could prevent another collapse. I have to tell you; this outfit is top notch.
