Local record

Three things on file about houses here

01

Post-war housing, and what it needs now

Much of the housing around the Monmouth University end of the borough was built between 1940 and 1969 — well-established, and old enough that supply lines, drain configurations and window and door frames have all had sixty-plus years of seasonal movement working on them. The neighbourhood also empties out over the summer, with 38.7% of residents there currently enrolled in college.

The drainage problem here crosses four jurisdictions

Flooding in West Long Branch has been formally identified as a drainage problem spanning four jurisdictions at once — the borough, Long Branch, Monmouth County and Monmouth University — with a Drainage Remediation Project for Whale Pond Brook requiring coordination between them. The Borough DPW clears the brook at least once a year as needed, but the regional watershed drainage still needs improvement. Across Monmouth County, 19% of properties are at risk of severe flooding over the next 30 years.

Around the borough

The borough’s southeast corner is taken up by the Monmouth University campus, and the surrounding streets shift character with the academic calendar — far quieter through the summer when students are away. Homes sitting on the Whale Pond Brook watershed carry the drainage load described above.

  • I’m so glad to have The Trusty Monmouth County Handyman out and repair my kitchen cabinets. The previous homeowner did not use the correct screws and even missed the studs on some of them. All secure and up to code now. He finished a little early and asked what else he could look at and cleaned out the tub drain too.

  • I called on The Trusty Monmouth County Handyman Services once again. This time I needed drywall repair. The texture that was applied to the ceilings during construction of this house — over time the texture started to release and some of it fell. I tried to repair this myself but had no luck. I’m not permitted to use ladders anymore since I have the tendency to fall off. That’s why I called the Handyman. He fixed all my texture that was falling. He also inspected the rest of my ceiling to check for any cracking so he could prevent another collapse. I have to tell you; this outfit is top notch.
