Two Freeholds, and they do not share a permit desk

There are two Freeholds, and they file separately. Freehold Borough and Freehold Township are distinct municipalities — the Township completely surrounds the Borough — and each runs its own construction department issuing its own permits under the State Uniform Construction Code. Filing with the wrong one does not get forwarded, it gets returned. The Borough construction office is on (732) 462-4903. West Freehold, despite the name, is in the Township.

Old housing, tight lots, no room outside

The Borough is old housing on tight lots. Over 40% of it went up between 1940 and 1969 and roughly 30% predates 1939 — Victorian colonials, cape cods, craftsman bungalows and mid-century ranches, with modest setbacks and not much room to work around the outside of a building. Just over half the housing stock is single-family detached. On a house of that age the supply lines, the drain runs and the window and door frames have all had eighty years of movement.

Do I file a permit with Freehold Borough or Freehold Township?

Whichever one the property is actually in — they are separate municipalities with separate construction departments, and the Township wraps entirely around the Borough. A filing sent to the wrong office comes back rather than getting forwarded. West Freehold is in the Township despite the name. We check which one you are in before anything is filed.

My house is in a historic district — does that change the job?

It can. The Borough has three historic districts, and work on a contributing property that changes what the street sees — windows, doors, porches, siding, roofline — can pick up a historic preservation review on top of the ordinary construction permit. Interior work and like-for-like repairs usually do not. Worth establishing before you order materials.

Why do older Freehold houses have the same problems?

Because most of them were built in the same forty-year window.   • I called on The Trusty Monmouth County Handyman Services once again. This time I needed drywall repair. The texture that was applied to the ceilings during construction of this house — over time the texture started to release and some of it fell. I tried to repair this myself but had no luck. I’m not permitted to use ladders anymore since I have the tendency to fall off. That’s why I called the Handyman. He fixed all my texture that was falling. He also inspected the rest of my ceiling to check for any cracking so he could prevent another collapse. I have to tell you; this outfit is top notch.

  • After The Trusty Monmouth County Handyman completed the work that I had asked for, I actually needed them to come back out to remedy a problem that I noticed. To my surprise, no questions asked, they were here the next day to fix this final issue. I seriously cannot recommend Ron and his team enough. They are wonderful people, doing awesome work!
