3,401 buildings sit in the flood hazard area
Middletown has 3,401 buildings inside the FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area, across 4,623 acres. The exposure is concentrated on the Bayshore: in Sandy, most streets north of Route 36 through Port Monmouth, Belford and Leonardo took storm surge off Raritan Bay. The Army Corps response — floodwall, levee, the Pews Creek flood gate and pumping station, and raising the Route 36 pavement — is a $265m programme still being built out in phases. The township also runs a repetitive-loss outreach programme for properties that have flooded more than once.
