In short

What does home repair in Monmouth County involve?

We take on general home repair throughout Monmouth County: drywall patching, door adjustments, shelving, hardware, weatherstripping, mounting and the assorted list that builds up in a settled house. Most of it closes out in a single visit rather than across three separate trades.

01

What the work covers

Very few repair lists are one trade. A bathroom that needs regrouting usually also has an extractor that stopped and a door that no longer shuts, and none of those three items is large enough on its own to justify booking a specialist and waiting a fortnight. That is precisely the gap this work fills. Bringing the list together also produces a better result than handling it piecemeal, because the person patching the drywall is the same person who noticed why it cracked in the first place.

The jobs inside this one

  • Drywall patching and repair
  • Door adjustment and hardware replacement
  • Shelving, cabinet and bracket installation
  • TV and wall-mount fitting into studs
  • Weatherstripping and draught sealing
  • Caulking around tubs, sinks and windows
  • Furniture and flat-pack assembly
  • Small fixes accumulated over a season

02

Signs it is worth a look

None of these means the worst on its own. Together they usually mean it is not going to settle by itself.

  • 01A list on the fridge that has stopped getting shorter
  • 02Repairs deferred because each one is too small to book
  • 03A property being prepared for sale or for a tenant
  • 04Damage left behind after other trades finished
  • 05A house recently bought with an inspection list attached
  • 06Seasonal jobs that never quite get to the top

03

Locally, this comes up because

Much of the housing near the Monmouth University end of West Long Branch dates from between 1940 and 1969. Supply lines, drain runs, door frames and trim in those houses have had sixty-plus years of seasonal movement working on them — which is why the repair list in a county house tends to arrive all at once rather than one item at a time.

How a job runs

The same five steps, whatever the job turns out to be

  1. 01

    You describe it

Call and say what the house is doing. Most of the time the diagnosis starts on that call.

  2. 02

    You get a price

Most jobs we can price on the call once you describe them. Where a job genuinely needs eyes on it first, we say so rather than guess.

  3. 03

    You get the position

What the job is, what it hinges on, whether a permit is involved, and whether it is ours at all.

  4. 04

    The work happens

At a time agreed with you — we answer any hour, seven days a week — with the parts already on the van.

  5. 05

    The room goes back

Swept, cleared and put back the way we found it, minus the fault.

Permits

Every municipality in Monmouth County runs its own construction office under the State Uniform Construction Code, so the answer depends on where you are. Structural work, and anything adding or moving electrical, plumbing or gas, generally needs a permit pulled before the job starts. Like-for-like repairs generally do not. We check before starting.

What moves the price

Estimates are free, and most jobs we can price over the phone once you describe them. What moves the number:

  • How many items are on the list and how they cluster
  • Whether materials are on hand or need sourcing
  • Access — height, furniture, and what has to be moved
  • Wall and ceiling construction — plaster, board or lath
  • Whether any item turns out to belong to a specialist
  • How much making good is wanted afterwards

04

Home Repair — common questions

Is there a minimum size of job?

No, but small jobs are far better value grouped. Two hours of assorted items in one visit costs considerably less than the same items booked separately across a month, because most of the cost of a small job is getting to it.

What falls outside what you do?

Anything requiring a licensed specialist — service panel replacement, gas line work, structural alterations needing engineered drawings, roofing systems, HVAC equipment. We say so on the call rather than starting and then stopping halfway.

Can you work through an inspection report?

Yes, and it is a common request around a sale. Send the list, and we will mark up plainly which items are ours, which need a licensed trade, and which the report has flagged as observations rather than defects.

  • I’m so glad to have The Trusty Monmouth County Handyman out and repair my kitchen cabinets. The previous homeowner did not use the correct screws and even missed the studs on some of them. All secure and up to code now. He finished a little early and asked what else he could look at and cleaned out the tub drain too.

  • I called on The Trusty Monmouth County Handyman Services once again. This time I needed drywall repair. The texture that was applied to the ceilings during construction of this house — over time the texture started to release and some of it fell. I tried to repair this myself but had no luck. I’m not permitted to use ladders anymore since I have the tendency to fall off. That’s why I called the Handyman. He fixed all my texture that was falling. He also inspected the rest of my ceiling to check for any cracking so he could prevent another collapse. I have to tell you; this outfit is top notch.
