In short

Local record

Three things on file about houses here

01

Half a square mile, and 543rd in the state by size

Englishtown covers 0.59 square miles, which puts it 543rd of New Jersey’s 565 municipalities by area and 46th of 53 in the county. It was incorporated in 1888 and is entirely surrounded by Manalapan. At that scale the borough is effectively a few streets, and the housing on them is old, close together and short on side access.

A building here has stood since about 1732

The Village Inn at Water and Main — also called the Davis Tavern — has its oldest section dating to around 1732, built first as a tailor’s shop and made a tavern in 1766. George Washington opened the court-martial of General Charles Lee in it on 30 June 1778 after the Battle of Monmouth. That is the age of fabric the borough core is working with, and very little inside buildings of that vintage is standard.

03

A borough inside a township, filing separately

Englishtown is its own municipality despite sitting entirely within Manalapan, and the two are frequently spoken about interchangeably. They are not the same construction office. Which one your address falls in decides where a permit is filed, and getting it wrong costs time rather than being quietly redirected.

5 out of 5 on our Google Business Profile

  • I’m so glad to have The Trusty Monmouth County Handyman out and repair my kitchen cabinets. The previous homeowner did not use the correct screws and even missed the studs on some of them. All secure and up to code now. He finished a little early and asked what else he could look at and cleaned out the tub drain too.

  • I called on The Trusty Monmouth County Handyman Services once again. This time I needed drywall repair. The texture that was applied to the ceilings during construction of this house — over time the texture started to release and some of it fell. I tried to repair this myself but had no luck. I’m not permitted to use ladders anymore since I have the tendency to fall off. That’s why I called the Handyman. He fixed all my texture that was falling. He also inspected the rest of my ceiling to check for any cracking so he could prevent another collapse. I have to tell you; this outfit is top notch.
