A summer resort that became a year-round town
Keansburg began as a fishing hamlet and grew into a resort for North Jersey and New York day-trippers in the early twentieth century — the amusement park opened in 1904, which makes it older than the municipality around it. Much of the older housing was built for that seasonal trade and converted to year-round use later, which shows up as heating, insulation and plumbing retrofitted into buildings that never expected a winter.
