Below the Ravine Drive dam the creek is tidal
Matawan Creek changes character at the Ravine Drive dam: above it a freshwater stream, below it a tidal estuary meandering through salt marsh to the bay. The lower-lying sections near Aberdeen Road and along the creek banks have flooded in major storms, and being tidal means the water can arrive without rain falling locally at all.
