Local record

Three things on file about houses here

01

The second oldest town in the county, founded 1664

Shrewsbury was founded in 1664 and is Monmouth County’s second oldest town — the original township was large enough that Fair Haven, Brielle and others were carved out of it later. What that means practically is that the oldest building fabric in this part of the county is here, alongside everything added since, and the two are not always obvious from the street.

A 1769 church with a musket ball still in the pulpit

Christ Church on the corner was built in 1769 to a design by the colonial architect Robert Smith, replacing a 1738 structure. It was used as a barracks during the Revolution and still carries a bullet hole in the steeple gilt ball and a musket ball in the original pulpit. In a town with that much surviving fabric, historic preservation review on exterior work is a live question rather than a formality.

03

A small borough inside a much larger original township

Present-day Shrewsbury Borough is a fraction of the 1664 township that carried the name, which is why neighbouring towns keep turning up in its history. For a homeowner the useful version is simpler: the streets around Broad Street and Sycamore Avenue hold the older stock, and the newer development sits behind them.

  • I’m so glad to have The Trusty Monmouth County Handyman out and repair my kitchen cabinets. The previous homeowner did not use the correct screws and even missed the studs on some of them. All secure and up to code now. He finished a little early and asked what else he could look at and cleaned out the tub drain too.

  • I called on The Trusty Monmouth County Handyman Services once again. This time I needed drywall repair. The texture that was applied to the ceilings during construction of this house — over time the texture started to release and some of it fell. I tried to repair this myself but had no luck. I’m not permitted to use ladders anymore since I have the tendency to fall off. That’s why I called the Handyman. He fixed all my texture that was falling. He also inspected the rest of my ceiling to check for any cracking so he could prevent another collapse. I have to tell you; this outfit is top notch.
