In short

Local record

Three things on file about houses here

01

The whole town is a National Register historic district

Spring Lake is designated a National Register Historic District, not just a handful of listed buildings. On a contributing property, work that changes what the street sees — windows, doors, porches, siding, roofline — can pick up a preservation review alongside the ordinary construction permit. Interior work and like-for-like repairs generally do not, but it is worth establishing which side of that line a job falls on before materials are ordered.

02

Victorian and Edwardian, and built large

The housing stock is dominated by large Victorian and Edwardian houses, with individually listed properties like the Normandy Inn dating to around 1888. Buildings of that age and scale have been re-serviced repeatedly by different hands over a century — the honest answer on a first visit is often that nobody knows what is behind a given wall until it is opened.

03

Two miles of non-commercial boardwalk

The borough has roughly two miles of oceanfront boardwalk and it is the longest non-commercial boardwalk in the state — no arcade strip behind it. That is why the residential streets run right up toward the front, and why salt exposure is a maintenance factor on houses that would be sheltered in a town with a commercial seafront.

  • I’m so glad to have The Trusty Monmouth County Handyman out and repair my kitchen cabinets. The previous homeowner did not use the correct screws and even missed the studs on some of them. All secure and up to code now. He finished a little early and asked what else he could look at and cleaned out the tub drain too.

  • I called on The Trusty Monmouth County Handyman Services once again. This time I needed drywall repair. The texture that was applied to the ceilings during construction of this house — over time the texture started to release and some of it fell. I tried to repair this myself but had no luck. I’m not permitted to use ladders anymore since I have the tendency to fall off. That’s why I called the Handyman. He fixed all my texture that was falling. He also inspected the rest of my ceiling to check for any cracking so he could prevent another collapse. I have to tell you; this outfit is top notch.
