Why does my door stick in winter and not in summer?
Because the opening is moving with the season. Timber and framing take up moisture and swell, and a door with only a couple of millimetres of clearance loses it. If it has always done this mildly, planing the edge in the tight season usually leaves a gap in the loose one — adjusting the hinges is generally the better fix.
Can a dropped door be fixed without replacing it?
Nearly always. Most dropping is hinge screws that have stripped out the jamb, and refixing into sound timber brings the door back into square. Replacing a serviceable door because of a stripped screw hole is a common and expensive mistake.
How much draught should an exterior door have?
None you can feel. If you can see daylight anywhere around a closed door, the weatherstripping or threshold has gone, and that is a cheap item doing real work — both on heating and on keeping water out of the sill.
