How often should a sump pump be tested?
Before each wet season, and after any long dry spell. Pour a bucket into the pit and watch the whole cycle: the float should lift, the pump should start, the water should leave, and the check valve should stop it coming back. If any part of that is hesitant, it will not perform when it matters.
Do I need a battery backup?
If the same storm that fills your pit is the one that takes your power out, then a mains-only pump protects you on exactly the days it is not needed. On a lot in Monmouth County with a known water table or a documented drainage problem, a backup is doing real work rather than sitting there as an upsell.
Why does my sump pump run when it has not rained?
Groundwater, usually — a high water table feeds the pit regardless of the weather. It can also be a check valve letting the discharge fall straight back in, so the pump keeps moving the same water. The second one is cheap to fix and worth ruling out first.
